Let’s discuss branding

What’s the biggest mistake startups make with logo design? We’re rebranding and torn between trendy (gradients! 3D!) and timeless. Our designer insists on a minimalist mark, but the team wants something ‘fun.’ How do we balance identity with versatility? Any red flags to avoid?

Re: Let’s discuss branding

Trendy dies; timeless thrives. The Clay design agency recently published a very peculiar article about effective logo design . It warns against overused trends (hello, 2016 geometric animals). Test your logo:
Scale: Does it work as a favicon?
Color: Does it lose meaning in B&W?
Context: Would it look good on a billboard and a pen?As an example, a tech startup chose a sleek, abstract mark—simple enough for apps but adaptable for merch. Avoid inside jokes; clarity > cleverness. Fun is fine, but legibility is king.
